Barenaked Ladies Star To Contest Drug Charges....

Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page has decided to contest his charge of cocaine possession, despite allegedly admitting to police he was snorting the drug before his arrest last week (11Jul08).Court documents, filed with the Fayetteville Village Court in New York, say the singer was arrested on Friday (11Jul08) after police found him and 25-year-old Stephanie Ford in an apartment in Manlius, New York, with what appeared to be cocaine. In a police statement, Ford said the two had just finished snorting what she believed to be cocaine with a rolled-up Canadian bill.

Another court document quotes Page as saying, "Yeah, it's cocaine" to officers who asked him to identify the substance.Page and Ford were then taken into police custody and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. They were both released after posting $10,000 (£5,000) bail. But a brief message posted on Barenaked Ladies' website this week claims Page will plead not guilty to the charge in his forthcoming trial and that "the validity of the charges against Steven will be strongly contested".
