U2 rocker Bono once wrote a song for music legend Frank Sinatra and serenaded him with it in a Mexican restaurant.

The pair became pals after Sinatra invited Bono to appear on his 1989 Duets album - and the Irish rocker took it upon himself to write a song especially for Ol' Blue Eyes.

Bono seized the moment to showcase the track, Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad, during a night out with Sinatra at an eaterie in Palm Springs, California.

He reveals, "We went out with Frank to a Mexican restaurant and drank margaritas.

I wrote a song for him, and sang it to him at the Mexican restaurant. Sadly he never recorded it.

Bono and bandmate The Edge did get a chance to perform the song for Sinatra again - at a special TV tribute to the star on his 80th birthday in 1995 - and his disappointment was further appeased when the icon's daughter Nancy recorded a version of the track for her 2004 album Nancy Sinatra.

In connected news legendary producer Brian Eno hated U2's iconic song Where The Streets Have No Name so much, he tried to erase it in the recording studio.

The track, from the band's 1987 album Joshua Tree, went on to become one of their most famous hits, and was named by Rolling Stone magazine number 28 in their 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of all time.

But U2 owe its release and subsequent success to a young technician who physically fought Eno, who produced the record, to stop him from wiping it from existence.

During an appearance on Elvis Costello's Spectacle TV show, guitarist The Edge reveals, "He had witnessed us try so many ideas it was all gray. So he decided to erase it and start again.

"He sent our junior engineer out of the room so he could erase it. The engineer had to physically grab him and pull him out of the control room."
