German musician, artist and film actor Bruno S.

has died, aged 78.

The star, who was born Bruno Schleinstein, died in Berlin on Wednesday (11Aug10).

Schleinstein was largely a self-taught musician, and taught himself to play the piano, accordion, glockenspiel and handbells.

He grew up writing songs and singing them on the streets of the German capital.

He was discovered by director Werner Herzog in a 1970 documentary aboutstreet musicians entitled Bruno der Schwarze - Es blies ein JC3A4ger wohl in sein Horn.

Herzog went on to cast him in 1974 film The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, despite the musician having no prior acting experience.

The film was a hit, and went on to win the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival the following year (75).

Herzog later wrote a part for Schleinstein in 1977's Stroszek, in whichthe musician played his own instruments.

Schleinstein's artwork has been exhibited in shows in his native Germany and in New York.

In 2002, his life was documented by German filmmaker Miron Zownir, in afilm entitled Bruno S.
