Cheryl Cole's husband Ashley is suing two U.K. newspaper groups for printing allegations he cheated on his wife.

The soccer star is taking Britain's Mirror Group Newspapers and News Group Newspapers to London's High Court, claiming the reports were "unjustified intrusion" into his private life and breached his human rights.

embarrassed and gravely distressed

The sportsman was accused of having an affair earlier this year (Jan08) - and the reports left him and his X Factor judge wife "embarrassed and gravely distressed", according to legal papers.

Girls Aloud star Cole claims that some of the information in the articles was "false and invented" - although he will not have to declare which parts were untrue in court.

Cole's lawyers are seeking unspecified damages and will argue the articles breached his right to privacy under the European Convention on Human Rights.

Representatives for the Mirror Group Newspapers claim that the articles were justified because the couple repeatedly compromised their own privacy by giving interviews about their relationship.

The couple have since got their marriage back on track.
