Baseball Icon Carter Dies

Baseball legend GARY CARTER has lost his battle with brain cancer at the age of 57.

The sportsman was first diagnosed with the disease in May 2011 and doctors discovered new tumours on his brain last month (Jan12).

He passed away on Thursday (16Feb12).

Nicknamed 'The Kid', Carter began his career as a catcher with Canadianteam Montreal Expos before joining the New York Mets in 1985.

He helped them to win the World Series the following year (86).

Carter went on to play with the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers before finishing his career at the Expos for one season in 1992, the year of his retirement.

The 11-time All Star player was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Famein 2003.
