Lady Gaga shot to fame in April 2008 when she released her debut single Just Dance. Gaga claims the single only took 10 minutes to write yet despite this the song became an instant hit, topping the charts in six different countries.
In August 2008 she released her debut album The Fame which managed to top nine charts making her an international superstar.
The Fame Monster was released in November 2009 and showed Gaga stepping up the crazy. Bad Romance showed Gaga displaying her visually creative side and the video for Alejandro created controversy with the church.
All of her albums have contained a mixture of music, from light pop tunes to heavy dance tracks and piano filled ballads and her latest album is no different.
Born This Way has arguably been the most anticipated album of the year and the hype towards the release of the album saw Lady Gaga reach a record 10 million followers on Twitter. Gaga released the first single from the album of the same name in February.
The electro pop tune was a great debut track and debuted at number one in the US on Billboard 100.
The song infected everyone with it’s upbeat tempo and feel good lyrics and got the most downloads in a first week by a female artist. The song went on to be the fastest selling song in iTunes history and topped an incredible 20 charts from all over the world.
The second instalment from the album came in the form of Judas. With a faster tempo and synthesised voice clips, it focused on feelings of betrayal and desperation, a far cry from Born This Way.
Judas caused controversy with the church again, as the video portrays Gaga as Mary Magdalene and sees her being stoned to death after falling for Judas and betraying Jesus.
The Edge of Glory was the next song to be released from the album and was inspired by the death of Lady Gaga’s grandfather.
The electro-rock anthem was described by Gaga as a celebration of life, about the last moment of life, that last moment before you leave earth. It has a euphoric and empowering feel that are conveyed through the lyrics and they way that Gaga sings them and is sure to be a huge anthem in 2011.
Hair was released 16th May and is a true pop-dance anthem. The song taps into feelings of the longing for acceptance that arguably everyone feels at some point in their life. It then brings feelings of self-liberation and empowerment, the characteristics that critics have praised.
Born This Way was released worldwide today and has a range of tracks from the highly controversial Government Hooker to the dark Bloody Mary and the rock based power ballad You and I.
This album has undoubtedly headed more towards dance based tracks over the pop tracks of the previous albums but Gaga’s voice stops it from becoming too hardcore dance and keeps it familiar to Gaga fans and the mainstream audience.
Highway Unicorn (Road To Love) is a electro-rock dance track that demonstrates how Gaga is bringing in more dance music to her tracks. By mixing it with heavy drums and guitar in parts, she keeps it from becoming tedious.
Heavy Metal Lover is almost trance-like in it’s sound and feel. The heavy beat along with Gaga’s soothing vocals will make this sound a club classic. The track shares similarities with Electric Chapel vocally, but Electrical Chapel changes the sound by adding heavy guitar which climaxes at the end with screeching riffs.
Bad Kids also samples some fierce guitar riffs and has more of an 80’s rock-pop feel to it which wont put in on the club scene but will ensure it’s a summer anthem for anyone who owns the album.
Both Government Hooker and Bloody Mary and the dark, haunting and controversial tracks on this album. The haunting chants, choir singers and slow, low-pitched tempo in Bloody Mary match the songs religious theme and the opera-like singing at the beginning of Government Hooker give it a dark aura.
Gaga is famed for her controversial songs and video’s, so fans of this side of her will enjoy Government Hooker. With the daring lyrics “Put your hands on me John F. Kennedy, I’ll make you squeal baby, as long as you pay me.” the song is sure to cause a stir, and the with Twitter fans voting it be the next song to be released, the video will be greatly anticipated.
Marry The Night describes Gaga’s love of the night and the life it offers, and with it’s fast, up-beat tempo it will become your night out anthem and allow you to re-live the good times over and over again.
Typical of Gaga’s albums, Born This Way features piano driven love song. You and I speaks about someone she names only as ’Nebraska’ and speaks of how he is her true love and of all the meaningful times they have shared.
This is a refreshing song as it sees Gaga step away from metaphors and hypotheses and just say it how it is, simply singing about her feelings. You can’t help but love it when you’ve heard it, with it’s rock-power ballad qualities, it expresses the feelings of longing, heartbreak and love and will allow many people to relate to Gaga.
Compared to previous albums, Born This Way is much more electro-dance orientated and has many more religious connotations, and although you may not like her, Lady Gaga is leading the way in terms of music. She recently hit over 1 billion views on YouTube and this album is expected to knock Adele’s 21 of the top spot and proceed to break many more records in the coming weeks.
Overall, this is a great album, with a different song for every mood you‘d be crazy not to like at least one track. The catchy beats and vibrant lyrics will have you going ga ga for Gaga after the first listen and you’ll be singing away without even being aware of it.
The only letdowns are Americano and Scheisse. Americano is too much like a hardcore dance track that you would find on Clubland and the likes and Scheisse is ruined by the snippets of German and hardcore synthesised beats, they both sound like they’ve been heavily remixed by DJ’s along the coasts of Ibiza.
It’s hard to image how Lady Gaga is going to outdo herself in the future, but in a recent interview on Channel 4’s T4 she said that she had most definitely not hit her peak and that she has lots more to give.
With millions of Little Monster followers, it looks as though Mother Monster could be headed for world domination so watch this space and remember, keep those paws up.
