Religious Mother Unwittingly Introduced Black To Rock.... Tenacious D rocker Jack Black discovered his love for rock music when his religious mother preached to him about "the devil's music".The actor/musician took delight in a tape recording of a preacher telling him to forsake rock 'n' roll because he heard Blue Oyster Cult's Don'T Fear For The Reaper for the first time.He says, "My mother was going through a Jews For Jesus stage and gave me a tape of a preacher."This guy was saying, 'Don't listen to rock. It's the devil's music and here's an example...' "He played a bit of Don't Fear For The Reaper and it sounded good. That tape was so dumb, but it turned me on to a lot of great devil music".
Black: 'Tenacious D Made Gnarls Barkley Acceptable'
Meanwhile Jack Black insists Gnarls Barkley would not exist without his Tenacious D duo, because he and bandmate Kyle Gass made large musicians acceptable. The movie star-turned-rocker is still waiting for a thank you from Crazy chart-toppers Gnarls Barkley because he is convinced Cee-LO and Danger Mouse would have been shunned if it wasn't for the popularity of Tenacious D.He says, "If it wasn't for the D there'd be no Gnarls Barkley - they'd be considered too fat."And we've yet to receive a thank you bouquet. We've had nothing at all from Gnarls".Advertisement
