Guitar legend Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay for copyright infringement - accusing the British rockers of plagiarising one of his songs.

Satriani filed a suit at Los Angeles federal court on Thursday (04Dec08), claiming the Yellow hitmakers copied segments from his 2004 instrumental If I Could Fly to use in their 2008 hit track Viva La Vida.

any and all profits because the track includes substantial original portions

Viva La Vida - the title track from the group's latest LP - shot to number one in the U.K. and U.S. and is nominated for a Song of the Year Grammy at the upcoming February (09) awards.

But Satriani - who has played with Mick Jagger and Deep Purple - is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" because the track includes "substantial original portions" of his song.

A spokesperson for the band was not available for comment as Wenn went to press.
