British singer Joss Stone blames her "atrocious personality" for the backlash which threatened to derail her once promising career.
After shooting to fame as a teenage prodigy, U.K. fans turned their back on the star - many accusing her of trying too hard to appeal to the U.S. market and even putting on a fake American accent.
Stone concedes she encouraged the bad press by hiding her private life from the world.
I think I suffered a backlash not because of my music but because of me - my atrocious personality probably. I don't give away too much about my private life so the media just make it up.
She says, "I think I suffered a backlash not because of my music but because of me - my atrocious personality probably. I don't give away too much about my private life so the media just make it up."
But she insists she's often unfairly targeted: "It doesn't matter what I do or don't say. I can just chill alone for months and still be labelled the biggest bitch in the world."
