A construction worker has been killed on a golf course owned by pop star Justin Timberlake after a 100-foot (30.48 metre) tree fell on top of him.

Cruz Ayala Delgado died at the Big Creek Golf Club in Timberlake's hometown of Millington, Tennessee on Saturday (07Feb09), police have confirmed.

A spokesperson for the Shelby County Sheriff's Office says the accidentoccurred at approximately 830 a.m., when the man was trying to remove the tree from the course.

We think at this point that the ground can be so unstable. It's very wet and very muddy that thebottom of the tree just gave way

Local fire department officials reportedly took two hours to remove Delgado's body from the scene after Big Creek employees reportedly tried to lift the tree but were unsuccessful.

Shelby County Fire Dept told Wreg in Memphis "We think at this point that the ground can be so unstable. It's very wet and very muddy that thebottom of the tree just gave way".

Timberlake and his parents purchased the course, where the singer learned to play the sport, in 2007 for $800,000 (Gbp544,220) to save it from residential development and have reportedly spent $16 million (Gbp10.9 million) on renovations.
