Britney Spears' ex-husband Kevin Federline was so shocked when he saw photographs of himself overweight, he was convinced they had been digitally altered.

The former dancer ballooned to 240 pounds (108 kilograms) after he divorced the pop singer in 2007 and has since blamed his expanding figure on a bad case of depression.

And Federline admits he didn't realise he had a problem until he spotted snaps of himself in the press.

He says, "While I was on the road I saw pictures of myself and what I looked like, and it was upsetting, it really was. "When I saw this picture, I did not think that I was that big. I thought it was Photoshopped.

You know? And, then I realised that I was just letting myself go.

"It's usually easy for me to brush stuff off my shoulder, but when it comes to my health... I had my own mother saying she was worried about my health. Those are like wake-up calls for me, or not running around with my children as much".

Federline has since shed the excess pounds by participating in reality TV show Celebrity Fit Club, which premieres on 8 February (10) in the U.S.
