Poison rocker Bret Michaels thought he'd died and "gone to Oz" after he was almost knocked out by scenery onstage at the Tony Awards - because he was attended to backstage by Liza Minnelli, Shrek and flying monkeys.
The singer was exiting the stage on 7 June (09) after performing Nothin' But A Good Time with the cast of musical Rock of Ages when a prop sign fell on him, fracturing his nose and slashing his top lip.
In his first interview since the "mishap" Michaels tells Los Angeles radio DJ Ryan Seacrest, "I thought I'd died and gone to Oz... I'm looking up and there's Liza Minnelli handing me a towel... I see Shrek... I thought how ironic that all the money I spent on substances in the 80s and 90s and all I had to do was hit my head on something - it was that simple andI could have this trip".
but here's what I'm a little upset about - no one has rushed out to get to the bottom of what happened
But joking aside, Michaels is still upset with Tony Awards bosses for not stopping the show when it became clear he was injured "After a motorcycle wreck, a little car wreck incident and a few football things I've had my bell rung a few times, but I've never had my bell rung where I go, 'What just happened...?' I thought a piece of the lighting rig or the staging had fallen over.
"The piece... kept coming down. Not only did the Tonys knock me out, they then continued to want to finish me off.
I said, 'Isn't it enough you knock my nose sideways...? The last thing left on Broadway will be my shoes or cowboy boots - like the Wicked Witch (in Wizard of Oz)...
That would be my final curtain call". The rocker insists reports he's planning to sue Tony bosses are untrue, but he's keen to find out why a night of fun turned dangerous. He adds, "It's a mishap...

Elton John had a miscue, the music didn't start, they pull him back too fast... The thing almost came down on Dolly Parton's head.
