M.I.A. is stunned by the success of her latest single. The rapper released 'Paper Planes' over a year ago but the song only achieved mainstream recognition this summer, which took the British star by surprise. She said: "I always took pride in being a little underground ? it really is a very unlikely record to cross over." However, M.I.A. admits she is delighted by its popularity - because it makes her feel there is hope for the future of music. She added: "The other songs on the chart are Katy Perry and the Jonas Brothers ? then you see 'Paper Planes' and it's cool because there's hope, 'Thank God the future's here.' "The song recently featured in movie 'The Pineapple Express' but M.I.A. doesn't understand why it boosted the track's sales. She told Rolling Stone: "I thought it was nothing. But the way human beings hear stuff, it's like, suddenly a song sounds better to you because it's been in a movie."
