Sir Paul wrote to an unknown drummer before Pete Best joined.

An early Sir Paul McCartney letter offering a British drummer the chance to join The Beatles is set to go under the hammer at an auction next month.

The note, which was recently discovered in the pages of a book at a Liverpool, England yard sale, was written in August, 1960 - just two weeks before the band was to head out on its formative gig in Germany.

McCartney had extended an offer to allow the unnamed musician a chance to audition for the group after stumbling upon the man's ad in a local newspaper.

It remains unknown whether the aspiring star ever followed up with McCartney but the new-found note has shed light on the band's early days and whether or not the member's addition would have altered the course of the group's success.

The Beatles ended up recruiting drummer Pete Best, who was later replaced by Ringo Starr.

The letter is expected to fetch at least £6,875 at the Christie's auction on 15 November.
