Mccready Fights for Son's Custody With Ex

Troubled country star Mindy McCready is fighting to regain custody of herthree-year-old son with the ex-boyfriend she accused of trying to kill her.

Billy McKnight was charged with attempted murder and served 30 days in jail in 2005 following claims he beat and choked the singer.

The case waslater dismissed.

McCready's mother, Gayle, won custody of little Zander in 2007 after a fight with the singer, and McKnight was granted visitation rights.

She has now left Nashville, Tennessee and relocated to McKnight's native Florida in a bid to win back custody of her child.

McKnight tells U.S. tabloid The National Enquirer, "(We're) getting back on track and learning to treat each other kindly. We're trying to get past all the bad stuff we've been through.

"We both came to the realisation we have to do everything we can to do right by our son. As far as our relationship as a couple, let's just say we're taking baby steps right now".

McCready has endured a series of personal struggles in recent years. In 2008, the singer made an alleged suicide attempt, admitted to conductinga long-term affair with New York Yankees baseball star Roger Clemens, and was arrested in June (08) for violating her probation for prescription drug fraud.

She also checked into rehab in July (08) with some reports suggesting she had swallowed a lethal combination of vodka and prescription drug Ambien, used to treat insomnia.
