Eleven people have died after they were caught in a stampede at a music festival in Morocco on Saturday night (24May09).
The annual Mawazine world music festival, which this year (09) featured stars including Alicia Keys and Kylie Minogue, was concluding in the city of Rabat when the tragedy occurred.
A crowd of more than 70,000 spectators packed into the Hay Nahda stadium to see Moroccan singer Abdelaziz Stati close the week-long festivities.
But security teams were unable to control the surging crowds when a wire fence snapped, and five women, four men and two children died in the resulting crush.
Around 40 other people are thought to have been injured, according to local police reports.
The Mawazine festival was created in 2001 and continues to attract big name stars to perform at the event.
