Nirvana on Course for UK Christmas Number One?

Nirvana are on course to land the coveted Christmas number one spot on the UK charts with the re-release of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.

As has become traditional in Britain, Facebook campaigns have led to classic rock alternative tunes getting a December release in an effort to stop novelty tracks and festive tunes performed by reality TV show stars reaching the top spot in the week leading up to Christmas Day.

This year's alternative choice is Nirvana's hit, which is currently asecond favourite behind the debut from The X Factor star Amelia Lily, according to Ladbrokes.

Also in the running is the cast of reality show The Only Way Is Essex with their cover of Wham!'s 'Last Christmas', Justin Bieber and Amy Winehouse.

The alternative Christmas number one tradition began in 2009 when a Facebook campaign helped propel Rage Against The Machine's 'Killing In The Name' to the top of the charts ahead of X Factor winner Joe McElderry's Miley Cyrus cover, 'The Climb'.
