Officials in Scotland are set to ban rock concerts at a sports stadium - after a recent Oasis show descended into violence.

The Wonderwall hitmakers played to 70,000 fans at the Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh last Wednesday (17Jun09), but the gig ended in chaos - with eight crowd members arrested for fighting.

Residents complained of violence and vandalism during and after the sold-out show, leading local politicians to launch an investigation into whether the stadium is suitable as a music venue.

It has been shown that large concerts cannot be managed there. It should be kept for rugby and other sporting events only. The police did their best but you are never going to be able to control a crowd like that

Edinburgh councillors have scheduled an emergency meeting for Thursday (25Jun09) to debate a motion which would outlaw all major non-sporting events at the stadium - putting an end to Murrayfield's history of music shows.

The stadium's most high profile event was the Live 8 Edinburgh in 2005,which saw performances from stars including Bob Geldof and Annie Lennox.

Councillor Jeremy Balfour says, "It has been shown that large concerts cannot be managed there. It should be kept for rugby and other sporting events only. The police did their best but you are never going to be able to control a crowd like that".
