Swedish rockers Opeth were caught up in a tragic suicide bid earlier thisweek (beg12Oct09) when their tour bus crashed into a driver aiming to take his own life.

Two members of the band, bassist Martin Mendez and keyboardist Per Wiberg, were on the coach with their stage crew travelling between Dublin, Ireland and Brussels, Belgium when the accident occurred.

The musicians and their entourage escaped unharmed but the driver of the other vehicle subsequently passed away from his injuries.

I just got a text from Mendez who's saying that the driver of the other car (who made the U-turn in the middle of the highway) that our bus crashed into, sadly passed away from his injuries

Opeth singer/guitarist, Mikael Akerfeldt, has revealed the details of the accident in a post on his MySpace.com internet page, claiming authorities believe the crash was intentional.

He writes, "I just got a text from Mendez who's saying that the driver of the other car (who made the U-turn in the middle of the highway) that our bus crashed into, sadly passed away from his injuries. On top of thatit seems as if it was a deliberate death stunt from his side as the police had found a suicide letter in the car wreck. "I've no idea who he was, but I have to say our condolences goes out to his family and loved ones".
