British Opera Star Van Allen Dies

British opera star Richard Van Allan has lost his battle with lung cancer at the age of 73.Van Allan, a bass-baritone who sang on the world’s opera stages, died on 4 December (08) in London, the National Opera Studio has confirmed.The singer served as director of the studio from 1986 to 2001, following a stellar career which included starring roles at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera in London, the English National Opera and the Sussex Opera in England, where he made his debut in 1964.Van Allan's final appearance was in 2006 at English opera house Glyndebourne in Die Fledermaus.He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Pickering, their daughter, and a son from his first marriage.
