Singer Sheryl Crow is spearheading a campaign to keep wild horses galloping free, urging U.S. President Barack O Bama to call off a plan to round up herds in Nevada.

The pop star has teamed up with horse advocacy group Cloud Foundation to ask government leader Obama to scrap a proposal to relocate 2,500 mustangs from the West to protect the range that is being damaged by them.

A statement released by Crow reads, "With one voice we are insisting that our government stop managing these beautiful and important animals to extinction. It's time for all of us to speak up for our wild horses and burros so we do not lose these living legends and inspiring symbols of our freedom in America".

Crow, who has adopted a mustang, has called the round-ups inhumane and unnecessary, reports Access Hollywood.

Officials for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management have announced plans to remove over 30,000 wild horses from the western rangeland over the next three years.
