Signed Beatles Album Bought For Thousands

A copy of The Beatles' 1964 album A Hrad Day's Night, signed by all four members of the band, has been sold for $41,000 (£22,800) at London auction house Christie's.Other items of memorabilia connected to the Fab Four include a letter from John Lennon to his first wife Cynthia, sent in the 1970s, which was bought for $21,500 (£12,000).The typed note is signed "your famous ex-husband" and features sketches of a face and trees. But another Lennon letter from the same era, to his cousin LEILA, failed to attract any bidders, despite being expected to reach up to $27,000 (£15,000).Both correspondences show how Lennon's relationship with Cynthia and their son Julian deteriorated after he struck up a relationship with artist YOKO ONO.Christie's Sarah Hodgson says, "John Lennon and Beatles memorabilia was highly sought-after yet again, with fans and trade alike snapping up rare items."The sale at Christie's follows another auction of Lennon items at Bonhams, also in London, earlier this week (begs22MAY06).

Memorabilia at the Bonhams bidding battle include a signed copy of iconic 1967 album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which fetched $25,000 (£14,000).
