The Klaxons Beat Winehouse To Win Mercury Music Prize....

The Klaxons are celebrating after winning the 2007 Mercury Music Prize - and beating hot favourite Amy Winehouse. The group's debut, Myths of the Near Future, was named the album of the year, beating off competition from a shortlist of 12 artists, including Winehouse, rapper Dizzee Rascal, singer Jamie T and last year's (06) winners the Arctic Monkeys. The honour and a $40,000 (£20,000) cheque was handed over to The Klaxons as part of a Grosvenor House Hotel ceremony in London on Tuesday night (04Sep07).

Winehouse, who has been taking time away from the limelight to recover from a health crisis last month (Aug07), made a surprise appearance and performed new single Love Is A Losing Game. But The Klaxons had no words of sympathy for the Rehab singer, insisting they "deserved to win" the big prize, because their album is "the sound of the future".And the trio's frontman Jamie Reynolds is glad they weren't beaten by Winehouse's "retro" music. He says, "We thought we deserved to win this. Nothing makes it better than everybody being on the same page and being behind us."
