Pop star Lady Gaga was overjoyed when she received a call from John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono earlier this month (Oct09), praising her for a rendition of the late singer's classic Imagine.

The Poker Face hitmaker, a gay rights supporter, belted out her version of Lennon's 1970s peace anthem when she took to the stage at the Human Rights Campaign's official dinner in Washington, D.C. earlier this month (Oct09).

She put her own spin on the song by altering the lyrics to reference late student Matthew Shepard, a teenager who died in 1998 after he was tortured for being homosexual.

That could be the most exciting thing that’s ever happened. She’s my idol.

And GaGa admits she was delighted when Ono herself phoned to voice her approval of the modern twist.

She says, "That could be the most exciting thing that’s ever happened. She’s my idol."
