Alvin Stardust has been given a funeral in Swansea, laid to rest in an emotional service.

The pop star passed away earlier this year on October 23 at the age of 72 after suffering from metastatic prostate cancer, buried near his Welsh home on November 5, 2014.

350 mourners attended the service held at St. Thomas Church - the same place Alvin married his widow Julie Patton.

Lord Michael Levy, whose company Magnet Records signed the singer honoured the star, saying: "I stand here as the creator of the persona of Alvin Stardust.

"But Alvin, you made yourself into such a great artist around the world."

Disney track 'When You Wish Upon A Star' from Pinocchio played as the icon's coffin was carried into the church, and male voice choir the Gawlia Singers performed Welsh hymn 'Calon Lân' later on.

With a career that spanned over half of a century, the star performed in numerous stage shows such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Godspell, where he met third wife Julie.

During the ceremony, his bandmates had glasses of whiskey poured for them around the coffin with a champagne bottle also opened, remembering his love for a drink following each of his live shows.

Members of the Harley Davidson Owners' Club accompanied the coffin whilst it was escorted to Swansea Crematorium at the request of his daughter Sophie.

Following his death, Alvin's self-titled first album in 30 years was released with manager Andy Davis explaining it as a showcase for some of his greatest music.

Andy explained: "He was very proud of it. He thought it was the best thing he ever made.

"He and I believed he still had a great deal to give so we recorded an album that is a testament to an artist who gave his career to music.

"He was one of the most genuine and likeable men I've ever met. His passing is a huge and sad loss."
