The Swedish DJ-and-producer - who battled with acute pancreatitis in 2012 and had his appendix and gallbladder removed two years later - broke his fans' hearts all around the world last week when he announced he was retiring from playing live.

But he has now admitted he had no choice but to step away from live performing in order to protect his long-term well-being.

Speaking to 'The Hollywood Reporter', he explained his decision: "To me it was something I had to do for my health. The scene was not for me. It was not the shows and not the music. It was always the other stuff surrounding it that never came naturally to me.

"I'm more of an introverted person in general. It was always very hard for me. I took on board too much negative energy, I think."

And, although the 26-year-old star is still battling with ailments, he has admitted he's already seen a huge improvement in his stress levels since his announcement.

He said: "I just feel happy. I feel free at this point. I have my private life back and focusing on myself for the first time in a long time. This was obviously the hardest decision of my life so far. But so far it has paid off tremendously in terms of well-being for me.

"I'm happier than I have been in a very long time. I can't say I'm never going to have a show again. I just don't think I'm going to go back to the touring life."

Avicii's retirement comes just five months after he released his second studio LP 'True'.
