The 33-year-old singer has slammed the industry for not allowing women the space to develop their “vivid, strong” personas, suggesting it focuses on image rather than art.
She said: “In the music industry, intelligence in women is undervalued. What p***es me off is that I write my own music, do the production myself, then get written about as a singer who gets dressed up.
“In the art world there are these extraordinary, vivid, strong female personas – Louise Bourgeois, Cindy Sherman, Yoko Ono – but music won’t allow women the space for that.”
Themusician - real doesn’t want to follow the mainstream trend of getting a big-name producer to put their ideas over her songs, and revealed she knows the success it might bring wouldn’t bring her happiness.
She said: “[Sometimes it’s tempting] to get a big remix done, or whatever. But it comes down to an ethical decision about whether it feels right, and I know selling out won’t bring me happiness.”
