Björk says each of her albums is a "character" and she is a "private investigator" trying to work them out.

The 50-year-old singer has explained the thinking behind her eight studio albums, admitting she feels like a sleuth who has to piece together what each of her records means.

Writing on Reddit, the 'It's Oh So Quiet' singer said: "i find it with each album there is a character and ive kinda been joking that they are like tarot characters and im like a private investigator throughout the album working it out. each character always has colours, elements, symbolism, moods and an emotional journey they go through. the older i get i feel i am better with connecting it all things archetypal and therefore hopefully more universal and relatable. (sic)."

The musician - who has two children, 30-year-old Sindri, and Ísadóra, 13 - also admitted she tries not to "force" creativity.

She said: "Perhaps the trick is not to force it and put it up against a wall and want it to be in a particular area, but rather with a lot of kindness sniff it out and wonder where it has gone to this time around."

Elsewhere in the online Q&A, Björk - who's latest album 'Vulnicura' was released in 2015 - opened up about her childhood and said growing up in Iceland helped her become more independent.

She said: "I prob was lucky because as a teenager in Reykjavik nothing was going on. So we kinda had to make it up ourselves and release it ourselves. So when I have been introduced to restricting claustrophobic routes, I've kinda just ignored them because knew they weren't true. (sic)."
