Fall Out Boy last night trended number one globally because of the surprise release of their new single 'Centuries'.

Paying tribute to the streets of Chicago in the 'Hyperlapse Edition' music video for the tune, the band will perform it live for the first time on Jimmy Kimmel, September 16.

Pete Wentz recently spoke to DIY about the tune, telling them that "the idea of the song is a David versus Goliath story."

"We'll never be U2 because we're from the suburbs of Chicago and nothing happens here, but the idea now is to inspire that kid - you can be the person up onstage and it's only the power of your belief that is going to get you there."

Borrowing a vocal hook from 1987 Suzanne Vega hit 'Tom's Diner', Wentz said in a separate interview with Radio.com that the group had hoped to "re-inject" the melody into pop culture.

Label-mate Lolo sang the hook, of which lead singer Patrick Stump feels was "so ubiquitous when we were kids."

"I mean, that song was absolutely everywhere and it just kind of disappeared. I haven't heard it in a minute. And I was like 'that's a shame. That was such an amazing song. I would love for that to get some kind of tip of the hat.'"

The group's new album is around halfway recorded, and Wentz said he believes it'll be completed early next year.

'Centuries' will see an official music video release soon, and is available now on iTunes.
