Green Day have revealed their plans to release a brand new single next week, with frontman Billie Joe Armstrong taking to his Twitter and Instagram accounts to announce the news earlier this morning (August 1).

The announcement comes after months of subtle teasing by Armstrong, who released both a picture in the music studio in January along with a video clip exploring the studio, taking a look at all of the instruments that may be being used in the creation of new material.

'Bang Bang' will be the first new song from the group since their surprise Christmas single 'Xmas Time of the Year' in late 2015, which was their first drop since the trilogy of albums released back in 2012.

Producer Rob Cavallo told fans that the band had been working on new material in April 2015, saying of Armstrong's work: "Let me tell you, they were just fantastic. He is absolutely at the top of his game.

"Fans can be sure that when they do return, the music will be amazing."

Armstrong had also spoken about the group's future in 2015 in a chat with Rolling Stone, admitting: "There's definitely a great spirit going on.

"We've always been pretty charged up. Before we found any of this out, I had already written a few songs and everybody was really excited by them. And then we heard about the Hall of Fame (to which they were inducted), and we were just blown away."

He continued: "We're not going to try and pull off some, like, victory lap over this because I definitely want the music to come from a real place and be inspired, not just because we got honoured or anything like that, but because we're honouring music.

"We want to work on them, and we want to make a great album."

The singer also said of the new material: "I've got, like, four or five songs right now. I'm gonna take it really slow. I'm just gonna make sure every moment is inspired and that we have something that's really special to us. And right now with the songs that we have, it's going in the right direction."
