The Beatles have this week been criticised by Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, who slammed the group's live performances in a new interview with Radio Times.

Richards said: "Musically, The Beatles had a lovely sound and great songs. But the live thing? They were never quite there."

Though they were at the peak of their career in 1966, The Beatles famously stopped playing live shows due to frustrations with the audience and not being able to hear themselves on stage due to the tremendous amount of cheers they received.

Despite being friends with the band in earlier life, they had gone their separate ways when the band got close with mystic leader Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1967.

He explained: "He was a f**king operator, a sucker job. But you have to think, what had being The Beatles done to The Beatles? They wanted somebody else to take them away. They didn't want to be God any more, so they plugged it all onto the Maharishi."

Keith Richards: The Origin Of The Species comes to BBC2 on Saturday, July 23 at 9pm.

The documentary is directed by Julien Temple and will explore Richards' childhood growing up in Kent following the second World War.
