Miley Cyrus is making "psychedelic" music with The Flaming Lips.

The 'We Can't Stop' songstress has announced she is collaborating with the rock band - fronted by Wayne Coyne - on some experimental pop.

They recently starred together in the group's video 'Blonde SuperFreak Steals the Magic Brain', which starred the 21-year-old singer as a brain obsessed alien, and now they are set to pair up again for Miley's next album.

She said: "I'm making some music right now with the Flaming Lips. It's different. It's a little psychedelic, but still in that pop world.

"I live to be in the studio, that's my favourite part, is bunkering down, working on a record. This record might take me five years. I don't know. I'm just going to work on it until I'm done."

Despite her controversial reputation, Miley insists her sexy stage shows and liberal attitude to cannabis use shows that she represents "freedom" for women.

In an interview with Australian TV show 'Sunday Night', she said: "The only thing I'm an example of is freedom, especially in this time where the energy of the world is shifting from male energy to female energy. I think a lot of that was started by these girls that get to watch my show and see young people just being themselves and representing freedom."
