2014 saw pop music sales overtake rock for the first time in the UK albums chart since 1999.

Over a third of sales (34.5%) in 2014 were because of pop albums, with the genre achieving its highest market share since 1999.

Statistics newly published by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) showed that rock albums achieved 33.2% of sales, with records coming from the likes of Royal Blood and Foo Fighters.

Pop music was responsible for 36% of sales in the singles chart, with rock achieving sales there of 24.3% and dance music achieving 16.2%.

Big pop releases in 2014 came from the likes of Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and American export Taylor Swift, who all released their albums 'In The Lonely Hour', 'x' and '1989' respectively.
