The track is the first Bond theme song to hit the top of the charts, with the tune dominating the airwaves, streaming and sales since its release last Friday, September 25.

Speaking to OfficialCharts.com, Sam said: "It was such an honour to be asked to write and record 'Writing's On The Wall' and it's incredible that it's become the first Number 1 Bond theme song.

"It's been an unforgettable experience working with Barbara [Broccoli] and Sam [Mendes] to become part of this British legacy.

"I couldn't have done this without my fans - this is a special moment I'll never forget."

Of the 23 Bond themes that came before Sam, only two ever came close to topping the chart.

1985 saw Duran Duran peak at number two with their track 'A View To A Kill', and Adele also fell short in 2012 with Oscar-winning song 'Skyfall'.

This marks Sam's fifth UK number 1, following 'La La La (With Naughty Boy)', 'Money On My Mind', 'Stay With Me' and 'Lay Me Down'.

Global Bond day is this coming Monday, October 5, and Sam is going to mark the occasion by releasing the full music video for 'Writing's On The Wall' at 00.07 BST.

The singer also announced today that he'll be releasing 'In The Lonely Hour: The Drowning Shadows Edition', which features a second CD of nine tracks that didn't appear on the original album, including collaborations with Mary J. Blige and John Legend.

'Writing's On The Wall' is available now, with 'In The Lonely Hour: The Drowning Shadows Edition' dropping on November 6.
