The 23-year-old singer unveiled the ballad last night (02.11.15) and has admitted he's not expecting it to be a big hit because it's not particularly "radio friendly."

Speaking on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio show ahead of the premiere, he said: "This is proper, really dark... It's so important for me to make soulful, true, artistic music and actually to make a point that I'm not going to do a repackage and put on there a massive, massive single that's hopefully going to boost album sales. 'Drowning Shadows' is the saddest song I have ever written and probably the least radio friendly song I have ever written."

The song features on Sam's repackaged album 'In The Lonely Hour: The Drowning Shadows Edition,' which he put together as a "thank you to fans" before he takes a short hiatus in order to refresh his mind and focus on his love life.

He explained: "I want to go back to how I used to live three years ago. I want to forget that I am well known and live a normal life with my friends and family."

'In The Lonely Hour: The Drowning Shadows Edition' is set for release this Friday (06.11.15).
