Elbow's album 'The Seldom Seen Kid' has been voted the album of the year in a new poll of UK music critics.

The record - which earned the band the Mercury Prize earlier this year - has topped the "poll of polls" conducted by record store chain HMV.

Damian Evans, HMV rock and pop buyer, said: The poll reflects an excellent, eclectic year in music

'The Seldom Seen Kid' received 18 votes from the 35 outlets questioned, beating Portishead's record 'Third' by only one vote.

Following Portishead was Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' 'Dig, Lazarus, Dig' in third position, with Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend's self-titled records coming in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Other bands to feature in the survey included Bon Iver, Glasvegas and MGMT.

Damian Evans, HMV rock and pop buyer, said: "The poll reflects an excellent, eclectic year in music. Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, MGMT and Bon Iver have really made their mark with wonderful debut albums, underlining how vibrant the music scene is right now.

"Established artists such as Portishead and Nick Cave have also returned to great acclaim, although I suspect few people would dispute that Elbow have given us the album of the year."
