Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos likens performing onstage to having sex.

The frontman reckons to give the best performances either in bed or with his band in front of thousands of people he has to lose all self-consciousness.

Alex, 37, said: "If I go on stage and wonder how I look and what people are going to think of me, I'm going to have a terrible show.

"It's the same when I'm in bed. If I stop to think how ridiculous I look, it would stop me in my tracks. In both situations I need to be completely lost in the moment. I need to be completely instinctive, totally primal."

He added that to get into the right frame of mind he has to accept how "preposterous" his job as a rock star is.

"You see that in the best performers. Whether it's Iggy Pop or Freddie Mercury, they realised the importance of accepting that being a rock star is a completely preposterous idea."

Alex also revealed Franz Ferdinand turned down the opportunity to play in front of the British royal family, after they were requested by Prince William for a Royal Command Performance in 2004.

He said: "I've nothing against Prince William personally and I appreciate the fact that he's a fan of the band, but ideally, musicians belong outside the Establishment.

"When they cross that line, it's like something in them has died. Hanging out with the Royal Family is simply not a very Franz Ferdinand thing to do."
