Freddie Mercury has been voted the Ultimate Rock God.

The former Queen singer, who died in 1991, topped a survey of 4000 people, narrowly beating Elvis Presley and Bon Jovi frontman Jon Bon Jovi into second and third place respectively.

A spokesperson for OnePoll, who commissioned the survey, said: "Everybody loved Freddie Mercury, his theatrical performances on-stage were incredible and set him apart from other rock stars.

He combined his ear for music with an ability to deliver to stadium audiences across the world, and as such millions of fans were devastated when HIV finally killed him in 1991

'Space Oddity' singer David Bowie came in fourth place, while Jimi Hendrix - the third of five deceased stars to appear in the top 20 - was fifth.

As well as Freddie, Elvis and Jimi, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994, and The Doors star Jim Morrison, who was found dead at home in 1971 aged 27, were the other dead rockers to make the list.

Commenting on the results, the spokesperson added: "The list of top 20 Rock Gods is a diverse mix of front men, guitarists and performers.

"There are some legendary acts in the list, but it's also good to see that modern day artists such as Dave Grohl earn respect from rock fans."OnePoll's Ultimate Rock Gods:1. Freddie Mercury, Queen2.
