Keith Urban is planning a "spontaneous" tour.

The country singer is set to embark on a run of concerts in May but says he hates doing too much planning because he prefers to surprise his audience.

He said: "I think the tour is going to be a blast particularly because I'm going to put a lot of songs from my new album into the set because it's a predominantly up-tempo record, which makes for a great live show. And hopefully we'll try to up the production. I'm always trying for more connectiveness with the audience.

"I'm trying to get down among the audience and have them feel like they're part of the thing, and to keep it spontaneous every night because everybody tends to like surprises. That's my job."

Keith's hatred of planning also stems into his studio work - he scrapped preliminary recording sessions for his forthcoming 'Defying Gravity' LP but insists he wasn't worried about the wasted work.

He added to Billboard.com: "I just don't like doing demos, I think. I'm not trying to recapture magic; I like to create a song in a much more organic process. I like to keep everything very spontaneous, and I think it's a much stronger record because of that approach."
