Taylor Swift has hidden "little codes in the lyrics" of her new album.

The 'Speak Now' hitmaker is renowned for writing songs about her famous ex-boyfriends, and admits there are clues on her new album, 'Red', as to who she is singing about.

She told USA Today newspaper: "It's pretty difficult to come up with, because I know you guys are going to figure them out. With the last album, I thought I was much more clever and cryptic than I really was. [But I'm trying to] hide little codes in lyrics."

The first puzzle to emerge is on Taylor's first single 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together', a heartbreak song which features the line: "And you would hide away and find your peace of mind / With some indie record that's much cooler than mine."

Taylor - who has dated Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer and Taylor Lautner, among others - admits her love life is a central theme to 'Red'.

She added: "I tend to kind of skew in the direction of writing songs about love. That's kind of where I naturally go. [These songs are about] really dysfunctional and not good generally relationships.

"When I'm writing an album, my world becomes a big storyboard. Everyone around me has the potential to be a character."

'Red' is released on Ocotober 22.
