The Strokes wrote their first album on "confusion and alcohol".

The 'Heart in a Cage' rockers enjoyed worldwide success with first release 'Is This It' and the band say that despite their frequent drinking binges, they were still able to function when working on the 2001 album.

Bassist Nikolai Fraiture revealed to NME.com: "Our single 'Hard To Explain' was a vague ball of confusion from that recording session, coming back to bar 2A and listening back to it.

He added: It sounds impossible but it was feasible at the time

"The vibe in the studio at the time was a lot of alcohol and focus."

Nikolai admits their unconventional approach to working doesn't sound realistic, but is adamant it is what created their success.

He added: "It sounds impossible but it was feasible at the time. That's how 'Hard To Explain' came about."
