Relentless and compelling, ‘Launch Yourself’, the first single from Adem’s second solo record, sees this most restless of creators striking off for new ground once again. Whilst many are just getting ready to board the nu-f*lk bandwagon Adem helped put the wheels under, the man himself is already long gone and is now combining his traditional song-writing ideas with notions gleaned from hip-hop and experimental music. With its pitter-patter of busy percussion (tongue clucks, spoons, wood blocks) and offbeat clattering, ‘Launch Yourself’ sounds edgy and driven from the get-go and, as the vocal layers of massed Adems join in over mournful cellos, struck glocks and tinkled bells, the song acquires a momentum that at once feels crazy fast and leisurely. This may be because the vocal is delivered at half the rate of the beat, which in turn makes for some inspired remixing from Hot Chip, Four Tet and Thomas Eriksen.“It’s the first time I’ve deliberately tried to begin writing a song with a rhythmical edge instead of a melody,” explains Adem. “I had been working with Hot Chip on a track on their album using vocoder and it got me thinking about what a vocoder actually does.“So, instead of using a vocoder, I decided to create something interesting using layers of vocals and limiting the chord changes to a bare minimum. The song basically just rolls on and on.”A highlight from ‘Love And Other Planets’, ‘Launch Yourself’ expands upon the album’s space theme, detailing abandonment on another planet as a metaphor for outgrowing relationships.
