Beth Orton

Acclaimed British singer and songwriter Beth Orton has announced the release of her new single ‘Magpie’. The single will be released on October 1st, on the same day as her new album 'Sugaring Season'.

Haunting and insistent, the track builds from spare acoustic guitar to an intricately orchestrated crescendo of strings, drums, and layered vocals. You can listen to it by clicking here.

"I am obsessed by the birds outside of my window," she told Rolling Stone about the song's inspiration. "Wherever I live I am followed by two blue jays. These birds have many stories attached to them.

"There is a lot of superstition and conjecture around their stories. These birds hold wisdom for me. They are also oblivious to the fear they raise in others. All the time people are inventing stories to justify actions that often have no bearing on reality.

"I have experienced being silenced and this song came out of that. It was my way of keeping my voice and a sense of freedom alive."

'Magpie' is taken from Beth Orton’s first album in six years and her Anti-Records debut 'Sugaring Season,' Recorded in Portland, Oregon, with producer Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists), the album bears the fruits of a period of introspection & renewal: deeply lyrical songwriting, a newfound expressivity of voice, and, more than ever before, a daring synthesis of her broad musical influences into a powerfully individual artistic vision.
