In today’s Daily Rap, Vibe Magazine closes its doors, a street in NYC is named after legendary collective Run DMC, songwriters recognized by ASCAP and BET addresses rumors about Chris Brown being omitted from MJ Tribute at Sunday nights awards
The End of an Era
After months of speculation, the magazine founded by Quincey Jones, Vibe, yesterday announced that it will be ceasing as a print magazine.
Vibe which has been on the shelves since 1993 has featured some of urban music’s most recognized stars, follows in the steps of various other publications which have folded over the last few years.
In a statement released by the EIC of the magazine Danyel Smith said "We were assigning and editing a Michael Jackson tribute issue when we got the news. It’s a tragic week in overall, but as the doors of VIBE Media Group close, on the eve of the magazine’s sixteenth anniversary, it’s a sad day for music, for hip hop in particular, and for the millions of readers and users who have loved and who continue to love the VIBE brand. We thank you, we have served you with joy, pride and excellence, and we will miss you."
Street Named after Run DMC
One of the most instrumental groups in the Hip-Hop timeline, Run DMC, are being honored by having a street named after them in the area in which they grew up.
205th Street and Hollis Avenue in Queens will now be known as Run DMC JMJ Way after the trio made up of Rev Run, Ralph ‘DMC’ McDaniels and the late Jam Master Jay.
Run DMC were the first Hip-Hop collective to be nominated for a Grammy and also the first to receive platinum and gold discs for their album sales.
Talking about the impact the Queens trio had on the culture and the Queens area a Council Member for the area said “Given their historic accomplishments, Run D.M.C. is a tremendous source of pride for the Hollis community I represent, their dedication and hard work has inspired countless others and they have given back generously to this community.
Most recently, Mr. McDaniels donated numerous memorabilia for the establishment of the Hollis Hip Hop Museum, which is located in the Hollis Famous Burger establishment on 203rd Street and Hollis Avenue.”
Songwriters of the Year
Famed for penning songs for the likes of Mary J Blige, Rihanna, Mariah Carey and Beyonce, songwriters Tricky Stewart and producer the Dream were awarded an ASCAP award this past weekend for their contribution to song writing.
The duo who were recognized at the ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Awards shared the accolade with Stargate, the song writing duo who had hits with Ne-Yo and Jenifer Hudson this year.
Chris Brown Never Scheduled to Perform
Various reports on Monday implied that Chris Brown was cut last minute from the Michael Jackson tribute laid on at this past Sunday’s BET Award Show aired live from Los Angeles.
Certain sources alleged that the reason that Chris Brown failed to perform was due to various artists threatening to pull out of the event if the R&B star was to take to the stage in wake of the recent controversy of his altercation with former girlfriend Rihanna.
Spokespeople for both BET and Chris Brown have vehemently denied the rumors that Chris Brown was even scheduled to perform at the event, even though he had performed alongside Michael Jackson at the World Music Awards back in 2006.
