JAY-Z SIGNS TING TINGS TO ROC NATION
Rap mogul Jay-Z is giving British pop duo The Ting Tings a helping hand in the U.S. market - he's signed the band to his new record label.
The That's Not My Name hitmakers shot to fame in Europe last year with their eclectic brand of pop, but they have yet to replicate the same chart success across the Atlantic, where their debut album, We Started Nothing, peaked in the Billboard 200 at number 78.
But the Empire State of Mind rapper is a big fan of The Ting Tings and has signed them up to his Roc Nation label to help boost their profile Stateside, and he's hoping to collaborate with bandmates Katie White and Jules De Martino to produce some new tracks.
A source says, "Jay is hoping to lend his production skills to some new material.
"The staccato rhythmic style of The Ting Tings sits well with what he does best so that was the attraction. Jay can make them one of the biggest bands across the pond."
The Ting Tings follow in the footsteps of fellow British pop group the Sugababes, who inked a deal with Roc Nation earlier this year.
COOLIO TO REPLACE DMX IN CELEBRITY FIGHT
Rapper-turned-reality TV star Coolio has stepped up to the challenge for a celebrity martial arts fight after DMX pulled out of the event last week.
DMX, real name Earl Simmons, was due to battle it out with actor Eric Martinez in an Alabama Pride MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) bout next month, but recently announced he was no longer interested amid fears for his safety.
Reports subsequently alleged the rapper quit because promoters at Thunder Productions refused to fix the match to guarantee him victory. Gangsta's Paradise hitmaker Coolio has now been brought in as a replacement. A Thunder Productions spokesperson tells TMZ.com, "(Coolio) is going to take this seriously."
WU-TANG CLAN AFFILIATES ARRESTED IN DRUG BUST
Two associates of rap group the Wu-Tang Clan have been arrested on drug charges in Arkansas.
DJ Mathematics, real name Ronald Bean, and Patrick 'Streetlife' Charles were taken into custody on Monday night after a routine traffic stop led to the discovery of a large stash of marijuana and ecstasy on their tour bus.
Cops grew suspicious of their vehicle when officers opened the bus door and "could immediately smell the odour of burnt marijuana coming from the interior of the bus..."
The police report adds, "The bus was filled with smoke and the odour of marijuana...." and when cops climbed on board to search the vehicle, they spotted "marijuana blunts and residue... laying in plain sight".
Over 100 ecstasy tablets were also found hidden inside a can, in addition to $8,615 (£5,384) in cash, reports TMZ.com. The two Wu-Tang Clan affiliates were among eight arrested on suspicion of drug possession with intent to sell, while the driver escaped with a speeding caution.
RAPPER B.G. ARRESTED ON GUN CHARGE
Rapper B.G. is in trouble with the law after he was caught in possession of three guns during a routine traffic stop last week.
The star, a member of Bryan 'Baby' Williams' Hot Boyz group, was arrested in his native New Orleans, Louisiana last Tuesday after cops discovered the weapons in his car, two of which had been reported stolen.
He was taken into custody on a felony gun charge, while two associates were also booked into Orleans Parish Prison on illegal weapons counts. B.G., real name Christopher Dorsey, appeared in court on Thursday to answer the allegation, although details about his current status have yet to be revealed.
