Placebo - For What It’s Worth

Placebo - For What It’s Worth

When I was growing up, I always used to get Muse and Placebo mixed up, namely because they both adopt this ethereal weirdness to their songs, or maybe it’s because Matt Bellamy and Brian Molko sound the same.

Anyway, whatever it was, I never really ‘got into’ either band, despite the fact that my step-sister used to pump Placebo out of her room every hour of the day, well, I’m assuming it was Placebo - I could be wrong.

Regardless of that though, after hearing their new single, For What It’s Worth, I’m very much regretting that the British trio weren’t in my life during those hectic teenage years, because judging by this song, there aren’t half a cracking collective.

With the kind of driving beats that so many rock bands seem to overlook these days, Placebo mix their edgy sound with something that you can’t quite put your finger on but which makes you want to stick to them like Velcro.

There’s little doubt in my mind that amongst every breed of ‘alt kids’ this summer - whether it be those folk who hang around your local supermarket car park, or those boys who like to dress up as girls (cue Kris from Hollyoaks) - this is going to be their anthem to 2009.

Rating: 5/5 - I take back all the jibes I made about Placebo when I was growing up.
