The Joy Formidable

The Joy Formidable

Out 28 March

Whirring is the latest offering from three-piece indie outfit The Joy Formidable and is the third single from their already successful album, The Big Roar.

The rise of The Joy Formidable in the last 12 months has been welcomed by the Welsh three-piece who released much of the material from The Big Roar first time round in 2009.

While the band received critical acclaim then and they did gain some attention from the use of one of their tracks on a trailer for Skins, The Joy Formidable only truly entered the public consciousness last year.

Whirring is a potent example of a sound that balances out delicacy with attack. The sweet vocals from frontwoman Ritzy Bryan gives the rock led music a dreamy dynamic comparable to the likes of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's as it simultaneously makes you want to dance and cry.

The band also fulfils the same Art-Rock genre as their stateside counterparts breathing a fresh lease of life into the tired genre of brit-indie.

The trio of Ritzy Bryan, Rhydian Daffyd and Matt Thomas self produced this album before collaborating with Rich Costy on the mix and the home grown sound only adds to the romance of tracks like Whirring.

The band have recently finished a UK and European tour and have just performed at SXSW before heading to New York for their finale at Webster Hall on 29 April.

Stateside the band is effortlessly causing a stir with Rolling Stone positioning The Joy Formidable as Ones to Watch for 2011.

Verdict: 5/5
