Abagail Grey

Artist: Abagail Grey

Album: Snowflake EP

OUT NOW

Rating: 5/5

It was back in August when Abagail Grey released the very beautiful and very personal EP Dark Woods but this week she is back with a new collection of five tracks.

Snowflake is an EP where the singer song-writer has completely changed her sound compared to Dark Wood - this time around the tracks a little more uplifting and light.

While the songs on the record do tackle some issues and ideas it is done it a light way and the tracks are perhaps a little more upbeat that their lyrical content would suggest.

Beauty is the opening track on the record and it has a very warm and almost wistful melody that gives an uplifting feel to the lyrics that look at the idea or mortality.

Abagail Grey has a very delicate vocal and this is on full show with this track and it really does sound incredibly beautiful.

Her vocal is supported by her fine piano work while the trumpet work from Mick Cook gives the song that little bit of extra something.

Bee opens with the piano before Grey’s vocals kick in and this is an acoustic and sparse track where her voice is really allowed to take centre stage.

Bee is a track about love and romance and Grey paints a very vivid picture through her lyrics and she uses the metaphor the queen bee and the hive - it is something that works so incredibly well.

There is a slight drum beat on the track and some deep strings that give the track a real calming feel.

Solidarity is the darkest track on the record as the piano and the strings give a rather bleak feeling sound - which in complete contrast to the record of the EP.

But she doesn’t dwell on this dark note as Winter is another upbeat and positive track as it is a track that celebrates the hustle and bustle and excitement of the lead up to Christmas.

This is another piano driven track and it has a lightness and joy to it that is incredibly infectious - Grey’ vocal style is really perfect for the song.

But the beat picks up half way through and as the strings and the piano surge and there instrumental section in the middle of the track is just fantastic.

Snowflake shows off a very different side to Grey as a musician as she has completely changed her sound from Dark Wood.

She has shown a more uplifting and vibrant side to her music and it is a record that is perfect for this time of year.
