Artist: Mary Gauthier
Album: Live At Blue Rock
Label: Proper Records
Mary Gauthier has been thrilling audiences for over a decade and now this week she is back with the release of her first live recording.
Gauthier took to the stage in Austin, Texas for this album and the result is a powerful and emotional collection of tracks that sees the singer at her vocal best.
This is raw performance from Gauthier from start to finish and it is not until you hear her live that you truly appreciate how great a vocalist she is.
Your Sister Cried is the opening track on the album and her deep vocals are beautifully supported by an acoustic guitar and strings.
Live At Blue Rock is a collection of songs that tell stories and are about people for example Karla Faye is about murderer Karla Faye Tucker who was executed after spending over a decade on death row.
There is just something that is so real and relatable about all of the tracks on the album and Gauthier delivers them with such a passion and sincerity.
The instrumentation on the tracks is just as important as the vocal and the guitar and fiddle really do play a very big part in bringing the stories in these songs to live.
Gauthier has never been an artist that has been into heavy production of her songs but it is great to see everything stripped away even further with this live recording.
Her vocal has such a commanding presence that you can’t help but get swept away with it and the story that she is trying to tell - every song is packed with emotion and her voice has a really gritty sound to it.
Blood Is Blood is a track that sees her vocally on top for in what is an incredibly passionate performance while Cigarette Machine and I Drink are other notable performances.
If you are coming to Mary Gauthier’s music for the very first time than Live At Blue Rock is a collection of many of her best known songs - not to mention you are hearing this artist at her finest.
While longstanding fans will be able to rediscover her music from a live perspective - this really is a great album.
