Rating: 5/5

Slash is one of rock and rolls greatest icons and this week he is back with his second solo album Apocalyptic Love.

First time round Slash collaborated with a string of artists but for this new record he sticks with the fantastic Myles Kennedy for the vocals.

And this album really doesn’t disappoint as it is rock and roll at it’s very best and there is no doubt that Slash and Kennedy make a super team.

This album is as much about the guitars as the vocals and opening track Apocalyptic Love is a perfect example as the guitar riff at the beginning of the track sets up the electric solo later on.

And by the end of this love song you are totally and utterly convinced that Kennedy and Slash are a rock and roll match made in heaven as the Alter Bridge front man can more than hold his own.

One Last Thrill and Standing In The Sun are two more gritty rock tracks that show off the true power and depth of Kennedy’s vocals - seriously if you have never seen this guy live then you really should check him.

Standing In The Sun mixes strong guitar riffs with an incredibly catchy chorus and it is one of the early stand out tracks on this album.

You’re A Lie is another fantastic track and is one of the more epic moments as Slash’s work on the guitar and Kennedy’s vocals really come together so seamlessly to produce a high powered rock track that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

Anastasia is a tracked not to be missed as Slash really does out-do himself when it comes to the solo on this track.

The song opens with a quiet acoustic guitar and you think you are about to get a ballad before the electric guitars kick in for another ball busting rock track.

The licks and the riffs that are on this track will make you want to punch the air with delight; it is my favourite song on the album.

But it’s not all about heavy rock and roll on Apocalyptic Love as Far and Away is the best ballad track on the record.

There is a real Blues feel on the track and the soulful lyrics that show a softer side of Kennedy’s vocal - which is pitch perfect. Far and Away is a song about lost love and it is the most emotional track on this album.   This is not Guns N’ Roses and it is not Alter Bridge as Slash and Kennedy come together to create their own unique and awesome sound.

And while this is classed as a solo album from Slash this is no one man show as Kennedy, Brent Fitz and Todd Kerns are the missing pieces that help to bring this awesome to life.

Miss this album at your peril as it is one of the best rock and roll records of 2012 so far and it shows that Slash is still well and truly the king
